New Jersey

I was going to go but think I'm going to pass. I'll definitely be going in Oct. Who ever is going to the fall show, we'll have to meet up. It will be really nice to meet in person!

The trap has been empty since the birds. My husband thinks the opossum is toying with him. He keeps setting it though.

It would be nice if some of us could meet up. I hope that trap holds something before you put the girls out there.

On another note, I just dropped off my rooster to his new digs. It doesn't compare to what he had. I feel awful, he looked lost when I put him down. They wont eat him though. I'm going to drown my sorrows with some wine now. :(

NJchixs - I know exactly how you feel. I rehomed my two bantam roo's to Agway and I was so miserable that my husband was willing to go back and get them! They had them in a tub in a really big shed in the back and their water was dirty and it was so hot . . . . . it was so hard because I raised them from a week old.

On another note, I adopted Mingming's roo and I know she felt the same way you do. But, Mr. Big is spoiled rotten and will soon be living in a big coop with a huge run!

Oh I am so glad you adopted him, he is handsome. I'm glad he will have a great home. I passed by this morning where I brought him, it was hard. I have nine other girls to take care of and in a few weeks will be picking up some more and one for Shadow rabbit. That will help the hurt.

I just posted a thread in the Laws and Ordinance forum. Please take a moment to look at it. There is a bill pending in the New Jersey legislature that would make it illegal for anyone to sell, barter or give away chicks UNDER TWO MONTHS OF AGE!
Please contact your representatives regarding this matter. The issue is under the bill regarding the restraint of an animal in a vehicle, but is buried under a number of other attachments.

Hi,
My name is Lauren and I am from Gloucester county New Jersey in a residentail area. I am married to Jim, I am a SAHM to my son Miles and fur baby Rosco. My husband and I are currently in the process of to adding a few hens to our mix. We are not total newbies to this, my husband's Granmother has a farm in Salem county and we are there frequently helping with the sheep and other animals. But we really love the chickens and other birds. MY son LOVES to feed them and just watch them. So we thought it was time to get a few of our own. My husband and I are on a quest to provide our son with healthy locally grown food. So this just makes sense for us to start with chickens ( and that all we are allowed to have).

As much as a wonderful and super knowledgeable resource Grandmom is to us, I am hoping to connect with other neighborhood BYC owners. I want to hear what works and what does not in South Jersey. I would also like some suggestions on what chicken would be good starter chickens for us. We want chickens for eggs to start with and only 4 max, and I am having a hard time finding a hatchery that will only sell me four pullets, I was thinking of heading to the auction. I was there today(auction off some rams) and they had boxes of pullets ranging from 2-25 in a box. Has anyone done this, if so what are the pros and cons other then the fun gamble it could be.

I would also LOVE to meet some really local people (west deptford area) and have a great little support network.
Thanks in advance,
Lauren

If you want four pullets, My Pet Chicken sells low quantities of sexed birds. Look around their site, they have a good variety. Oh, and Welocme to BYC from the shore!
