Once hens start to lay eggs are they pretty consistent or do they skip a few days in between?
Depends on the breed. Some of them lay daily, some every other day and some of them only lay occasionally.

July 28th- first good egg
July 29t- NO EGG
July 30th- second good egg
July 31st- laid a shell-less egg from roost
Aug 1- no egg
Aug 2- no egg
Aug 3- third good egg
Aug 4- fourth good egg- laid about 3pm
Aug 5- fifth good egg- laid about 4pm
Aug 6- sixth good egg- laid about 5:30pm
Aug 7- NO EGG
Aug 8- seventh good egg- laid about 9am
Today.....hoping for another one, and some encouragment for the other 8 hens to start shootin them incredible, edible eggs!!!
Oh ok, I guess I thought when they start they just keep on going - haha. I have two that are laying now, a Buff Orpington and a Barred Rock. So far three good eggs and one thin shelled egg in the past four days. Thanks all for your information on this!
All birds are different and the breeds also make some difference. Some will lay almost daily and some may skip a day or two, or several days when they first start laying. My Isa Browns barely skipped but my RIRs skipped more. Now I have some RIWs too. They haven't started laying but should start pretty soon. This is my first time at raising the RIWs so it will be interesting to see how they lay.
