Warning: This thread is addictive and dangerous to your FREE TIME
Thank you all for the welcome been peering in for awhile because I just love the Marans
Just now growing some up
Debbi looked at that link and my roos are just getting the color to their backs
So the deep red aint what I should be looking for right ?
They sure are pretty
I only have 2 bcm now. They are around 3 weeks. I think I got a rooster and a hen. They both are feathered leg and wade jeane lines. And I got 15 more bcm from bargain on my bator and I ordered some golden cuckoo. So now to my question. At what age do y'all start culling. When can you tell of they are going to be "French Standard" or not. And also bargains birds are French standard so will I be luckily and the chicks be good it will I have to cull. Bc I'm totally new to marans so I wouldn't know really what to cull or not. I know I could post on here. But just wondering at what age

If the darker colored roo is more of a mahogany color, it is too dark. I actually prefer that look myself, but the new proposed standard calls for copper. Here is another link to check out, for newbies and oldies alike! Lots of good pics and info. God help you if you have dial-up as I do!

Welcome aboard, and good luck with your hatch! The old pros on here tend to say you should wait about 5 or 6 months to cull. That is unless there is something obvious, like a birth defect or something. These birds can change drastically in a month's time! As for the "French Standard" term, most are referring to the shank/toe feathering. If they aren't born with any feathers on their legs, they aren't going to have them as adults. Even when two birds with feathering are bred, there can still be chicks born with no leg feathers. Just another fault in the breed to overcome. Seems to be an easy fix with the next generation.
