New Member ... and a little nervous!

from California!

What a blessing to have an instant flock of friendly hens!

Here's the location of Henderson's Handy Dandy Chicken Chart:
http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

I find it invaluable for breed information. Another, with pictures, is feathersite.com but it is linked right off Henderson's Chart pages, so you can see photos of breeds.

You will not need to compost kitchen scraps any more, as those are wonderful treats for chickens. They should be fed feed, but the scraps are extra treats. Just compost the chicken poop and coop litter for the best garden fertilizer EVER.

Chickens are also relaxing... Watching them do their chicken things is what we call Chicken TV. Their antics can make you laugh, too. All good for your health.

Plus, each chicken has its own personality, which you will get to know.

Every bird but the young juveniles in my flock is named; I wait for their personalities to emerge before I name 'em.

BYC is the perfect place to come for information, assistance, reassurance, and just to communicate with other chicken folk. I have a great many friends I've never met, now!

. Glad you are among the chicken raisers, even if it wasn't your choice! Sounds like you'll make a great chicken mom - there are tons of people here to offer you help! Best of luck!

Congratulations!!! All you have to do is mention you have eggs and you will have more people than you will be able to handle that want them. I wish you well in your new adventure!

Welcome Emily, from Colorado!

You have definitely come to the right place if you have ANY questions. I'm a new chicken owner too, my choice though, and these people are AWESOME. I check in here more than facebook!

You will have no problem getting rid of those eggs - it's amazing when people figure out you have chickens - lots of friends! Gotta say that the guy you bought your house from is kindof a jerk, but glad those girls found a caring new homeowner.

Shout out your questions - again, the people here know everything. (Not me - the other people

Welcome to the forum; it is a great resource. Since it sounds like you enjoy animals, I bet you will like the chickens. They don't take much work and giving eggs to the neighbors is a good way to get acquainted and get them to do a chicken check-in when you are out of town perhaps. Hopefully there is a feed and farm store not too far away like Tractor Supply. I moved into a house with acreage that had free ranging chickens, and my husband and I were soon hooked.

Welcome Emily from Western PA! What a nice housewarming surprise...good thing you are an animal lover! I have found that you can find an answer here for almost everything you encounter from feed and housing to medical and predator emergencies! Raising chickens is a rewarding "hobby"!

Hello and welcome from OHIO! Sounds like you're doing a fine job with your little hens! Take some pics if you can, and we can help you figure out what breed you have!

Take care,
Sharon

Thank you all for the warm welcome, I'm a little flustered, I've never brought a new pet into my house without doing a crazy amount of research first, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible.

I had a few things explained about what I should do, and was told that the girls always spend the day wandering around my property (though he had to assure me they wouldn't run away - he said they have always just hung around) and then said to lock them up in the chicken coop at night when they all go in there to roost.

I'm still in the midst of unpacking and moving the rest of my stuff, so once that is settled I'll have to get more in depth with my girls and get some pictures to figure out what breed they are... they all look very very different! I just wanted to make sure I had somewhere to go if some sort of emergency came up.

I can't wait to get to meet you all!

That's great that your neighbor has chickens too! They will go in to roost at dusk so make sure you close them in for the night. Not sure where you are located but if I left mine out for the night...not sure any would make it. I had them closed up in a run attached to a coop and a weasel got in the run and killed 2.

Not meant to freak you out...just wanted to stress the importance of safely closing them in

As a new chicken owner myself, I can say that for me, the most fabulous function on this site is the search! If you're sure that you have the most idiotic question in the known universe....do a search....chances are that at least 6 other people have asked it in the past!

The man whose house you bought....well, were I you, I'd probably feel like I just found the Mona Lisa at a yard sale! Some people just don't appreciate what they have. Sounds like you were meant for these girls!! Hang on to your hat - you've got a lot of great fun ahead!!
