(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My mom got chickens 16 years ago after immigrating our family to Australia. They were silkie chickens. I got my first chickens myself in my early 20s but suffered a terrible miscarriage that almost killed me so I gave them to my mom. I planned on getting them for years but didn't have the set up after that. I moved back to the US eventually. I started heavily researching homesteading around 2015 after my second child was born. I was always looking for a way to get some chickens and a set up for one. After me and my husband got married in 2021 he had a wood building moved repaired and roofed for me and I finally started a very chicken math flick of 32 within a month 💀💀💀💀💀💀then I got ducks and those have been so fun. Now I have goats too. The best spiral ever.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I have I have about 33 chickens between chicks and older birds. I have about 20 eggs in my incubator.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Black australorp Jubilee Orpingtons chocolate orpingtons light Brahma sapphire gem silver laced Wyandotte white Wyandotte speckled sussex ameraucana a few barnyard mixes and I have several types of green and blue layers in my incubator plus some eggs from a friend and a few I threw in from my flock for good measure. I have 2 incubators. I also have 2 silver apple yard females and a black swedish female duck.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I just love them tbh but also I haven't always lived an easy life and they give me a sense of food security and peace. I had my flock wiped out once and I had so much anxiety and fear. I feel like being able to keep chickens and have fresh eggs and if needed meat is a true blessing.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I keep goats. They are my pets. I love sitting out and watching them. I also have a Pyreneese female who I love to spend time with and we keep a garden for food yearly. I'm not a great gardener but I like to do it. I like to cook. I made homemade pasta yesterday and turned it into ravioli. I cook ALOT of Italian but love asian cooking too. I love hatching eggs and going to the livestock auction.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have goats cats a rabbit and a Pyreneese. We have 4 kids. The oldest is 16 and the youngest is 2. Keeps this chaotic but it's fun. I work for a men's transitional shelter as a cook. The shelter deals with alcoholism. Me and my husband also have a homeless mission Church where we deal with poverty and homelessness.
