Hello Jessica and welcome to BYC i think the repairs and bleach would be perfect. Just allow it time to dry and do your sniff test again afterwards. I think that would be a great home for your flock. Best of luck
It sounds like an ideal location for a chicken coop, even if you need to do some reconstruction needed for removing mold and replacing boards if needed as they are quite porous and the mold can live deep inside.
I agree ventilation and moisture elimination will keep most of that in check by creating an unfavorable environment for mold. Regardless, your chicken will love a weather protected place to be whenever the climate doesn't meet their needs. Mine seem to spend their days when it is rainy on my porch under a very large carport/deck these are the days they refuse to free range.
Welcome to the BYC nuthouse and please update us with photos and stories of your flock when they are available. Trust me we wont be thinking of you as a crazy chicken lady!
I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
