Hi everyone! My husband and I "adopted" a lonely Golden Lakenvelder chicken last winter who escaped when our neighbors moved. I think she was the only one of their flock that survived. We decided to buy some more chickens to keep her company building a coop and renovating an old dog pen for their yard. Now we have 2 production reds, 1 cuckoo marans, and our Ginger, our Golden Lakenvelder. She is still the only one laying, as the others are only 5 months old. Any suggestions on type of food (layer pellets versus crumbles, etc.)? I am also going to get a 4 week old Ameraucauna next weekend from my "city" daughter.

Hi and :welcome

At five months old, you'll be good starting them on layer pellets. You can also get layer mash, which my hens prefer, because there are all sorts of seeds in there as well as the pellets.

as for getting a new younger chick, you might want to be careful introducing it to the existing flock as it might get pecked. You should think about getting more than one younger one so she'll have someone to hang out with if she gets picked on. :)

Good luck! I hope you find all the info you need here.
