New member in Vermont with chick temperature question

Hello and welcome to BYC! Glad you joined.
I brooded in my coop in April in NY with a towel tossed over a brooder plate when temps dipped to 23F. The chicks did great.

The Sweeter Heater is meant to be used as ambient heat. If it is close enough to the floor of the brooder that the chicks can touch their backs to it they'll be warm enough. Think mama hen; she doesn't heat the air around her but she heats the chicks under her. They come out to eat, drink, and play. When they get cold they make a b-line for mama.
Please be sure that your brooder is sturdy and has plenty of ventilation but doesn't have any opening over quarter sized. Kiki is right, rats and mice are deadly to baby chicks.
