I have been raising hens for 35 years in CA and finally joining BYC after lurking for a few years.
I usually have about 12 or so in a 60 sf coop. I used to like to let them out to free range, but the last couple of years a bobcat has nabbed a few. Bummer...very enjoyable to see them pecking around the yard.
Over the years, I settled on Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks. For years I had a few Sex Link and I finally figured out that they were more aggressive than Orpingtons and Barred Rocks. I always had to debeak my hens, which is NOT a fun job. In recent years, no Sex Links so no problems. Can’t we all just get along???
I’ve been spending a lot of time in recent days on BYC to research Whiting True Blue. I just ordered 5 (in an order with 5 Orpingtons and 5 Barred Rocks). Ordered from McMurray, arriving in May.
BUT I’m kinda worried about Whitings and whether they will get along with the other breeds.
