Hello, my name is Heather Sheppard.

I have been reading on this forum for longer than I've owned chickens. This group has answered many questions for me as I've prepared for getting chickens and along the way of having them.

I got my first flock 2 years ago on May 5th. I ordered my chicks from mypetchicken.com and got 5 perfect little chicks.

Rose: barred rock
Tulip: speckled sussex
Marigold: golden laced wyandotte
Lavender: silver laced wyandotte
Buttercup: buff orpington

I am an avid gardener, and loved the idea of adding eggs to our less than 1/4 acre, urban homestead at the beach. It has been a wonderful experience. I can't say that it's been very economical for me, as the city was only doing temporary permits and I was part of the pilot, so their requirements were quite extreme, and therefore expensive.

I wish I had built my own coop instead of buying, but that's a story for another day.

My girls are definitely treated as pets, but I am also of the mind that they are working animals, so I am still contemplating how that will play out as egg production subsides and/or when illness arrives (I'm currently having a bit of a scare with my girl Rose---which I've posted about here https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...r-infection-or-just-make-comfortable.1305745/)

My husband and I were even featured in our local Edible Magazine regarding our backyard birds, which was lovely and an honor. Here's a picture from the shoot.

I look forward to being in this group, and want to thank all of you who participate as I've used your information so much over the years.
