Hi, I have a baby chick that had a rough time going through hatching. She has dry crusty stuff on her back also her foot is all messed up. We tried using a wet wash cloth multiple times to get the crusty stuff off, but it is not really working. We did try the coin and bandaid to help straighten out her foot but it didn’t really help much. Any ideas on what could help?

No idea as I usually cull them. However, about 4 years ago I hatched a heritage RIR that was supposed to go back into my breeding stock. She was all jacked up on 1 leg like that. My wife said to let her live a bit as she was sweet. I don’t have time for that nor the patience. That was 4 years ago and ol crooked foot is still out there with the mixed flock in their 2 acre pen. I look for her every single day when I’m out there because I’m so surprised she’s still alive. She gets around, slowly, but is happy as can be. She uses her wings a lot if she want to get somewhere semi-fast. She can’t roost so she has her own nest box she sleeps in. Oh, and she goes broody a lot.

Thank you for that insight to what the future of this chick could be, and telling me that it does have a chance. Does anyone have an idea to get that hard stuff off of its back? Besides soaking, because that isn’t working well.

Dry toothbrush can work, or 'preen' the stuff off with your fingernails...
....but I'd not keep a bird with that leg.
