Hello,
I'm soon to be a chicken owner. I can't wait to start this adventure. I started out on a farm when I was younger. It's been 25 some years since then and I want chicks. I have finally convinced my husband to let me get some. Only thing holding me back currently is his retirement. Not sure if we are moving or not so I'm waiting until he figures it out. In the mean time I'm researching all I can. Any advice is welcome. I'm looking to get chicks that will be friendly and lay me some good brown eggs. We currently live in Wisconsin but may move to Washington. I've blabbed enough I think.

Good to have another chicken lover join us.

There are several 'chick selector' tools you can use to help narrow down the breeds you may want. Check these out to get you started:
https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html

http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/which-breed-is-right-for-me.aspx

Then there's this handy chart that lists the breeds and shows characteristics such as broodiness, average weight, egg color, etc.

Have fun choosing your flock and if you have questions, just ask.

I finally got my chickens!! We ended up moving into our old house in the city so I can only have 4. I found a local farm to get my ladies from. We got an Easter Egger named Esther ( my girls came up with the names), A Barred Rock named Punky Rocky, a New Hampshire named Casey, and a RIR named Chasie. The girls are loving the ladies especially Esther. I did have to separate Esther because they pecked her bum pretty raw and other spots. My husband made a separate pen for her. They can see each other through the runs but can't get to her. She is quite smaller than the others. I'll figure out how to put pictures on later. For now I need to go see my chickens.

Hi :welcome
Glad you could join the flock! Here is a nice section of the learning centre on raising chicks https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-and-raising-chicks
It has lots of great articles on getting started with them and all that they need when they are young. I started out with red sex link hens and found them to be excellent egg layers a nice steady easy to manage bird.

Wishing you the very best of luck and hope you enjoy BYC, I am sure you will :frow

I'm glad you joined our "flock"

Some breeds that I would recommend would be Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, Australorps, and Orpingtons. I'm especially a fan of the Wyandotte breed. They'd be a great choice for your climate, as they are cold hardy and usually fine in heat as well. My Wyandottes have been very good layers (250+ eggs each, per year) of light brown eggs and have been docile, sweet, and inquisitive.

Good luck with any future poultry adventures!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Buff orpingtons are my favorite breed. They are affectionate, gentle and docile. Plus they lay large brown eggs and are cold hardy. Australorps and barred rocks are great egg laying, docile chickens too!
