(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I had 10 hens about two years ago for about 4 months in a pvc coop with 2" hole thin chicken wire around it, until a fox murdered 8 in one night and came back the next night and got the 2 remaining. I was very new to this and didnt do my research well. This spring we decided to own chickens again, so I ordered 10 easter egger pullets from hoover hatchery 3 weeks ago, lost 2 the first week, but the rest are thriving so far. and picked up 4 straight run rhode island reds at tractor supply, hoping for a rooster. unfortunately i think i have four roosters!!!:he 3 gotta go once i can surely sex them. Im in the process of building a 10x12 run and a 4x10 coop, with 2x6, 2x4, plywood, and 1/2 hole hardware cloth covering every open area , and going to run a 3' skirt of chicken wire under the ground all the way around it to keep the fox from digging under like he did last time.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
12
(3) What breeds do you have?
EE and RIR

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I just love to let them run around the yard when im home and free range and dust bathe. and when they come running chasing you cause you got food is the best !

Learning the hard way how to predator-proof a coop is heartbreaking. I'm sorry both you and I had to learn that way.

But, it sounds like you will be taking great care of your new flock.

The local Bomgaars gets all its chicks from Hoover's, and I have been pleased with every one of them.

Welcome to the group, and best wishes to you and your new flock. Hope you get your rooster numbers worked out.

Wow, that's a lot of crawfish! I think my hubby would be jealous (he's from Georgia). And it looks like you've got a great plan for your new coop setup. But boy oh boy, you better get that thing finished quick... those chicks are getting big and believe me, I don't think you want them in your house much longer!
Best wishes and better luck in your 2nd chicken adventure!

Yep, they havent started to stink yet, but i do clean out their bedding every other day, but its surely becoming a bigger and bigger chore keeping bedding, food , and water clean as they are getting older and flapping everywhere making such a mess.

Ya we love some crawfish around here, they are in season from jan-jun and we try to boil about twice a month. gather friends and family, and just have a gay ole time! :)
