I don't know if I would recommend a tractor if you have more space available. I've heard too many stories of how cumbersome they are to move frequently and impractical they become over time... they also don't seem very predator proof as a permanent home. Tractors work best for daytime excursions across the yard.

Chickens have a tendency to become very addictive, and flock size seems to grow as your addiction and quest for new varieties grows. I think building the largest coop and run possible would be your best bet. If you just want to get your feet wet with chickens before you invest a lot, you could *wince* get a prefab coop to see how it goes, then build the big coop after you decide you love chicken keeping... and use the little one later on as a brooder, hospital or jail.

Here are some helpful articles with important information to keep in mind when planning and building your coop:

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock! :welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost!:highfive:

Hardware cloth or electric netting is only good for preventing and eventually deterring predators. Chicken wire or mesh which is a cheaper and more flimsy form only keeps the chickens in. There is better purpose in constructing your own run so you can choose the size of its expansion. Generally, they turn out to be more substantially built.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!
