Thanks. I willMichele, I think it would be best in you posted on the South Cal thread and see what responders have to say. Folks in the area with chickens would know best what breeds handle the heat well.
Thank You! Great Info.First, kudos to you for doing your research before getting your birds, and BYC is a great place to learn.
If your goal is three friendly chicks, I'd choose at least one Speckled Sussex. It is a very old British breed, lovely colored and mine likes to stay close and "help" me with any outdoor project. EE's can provide beautifully colored eggs, and as far as being pretty docile and darned cute, I like Salmon Faverolles with their fluffy face and feathered legs.
In Iowa, chickens have to survive sub-zero weather all the way to above 100-degree temps, and the ones I've suggested have managed to do fine here.
Welcome to the group. Looking forward to seeing what you decide!
Thanks for the info!Hello, Michele, and welcome to BYC!Glad you joined.
No matter what breeds you get you will need to provide them with a means to keep cool during your heat waves. Deep shade on damp ground is the best. I also leave a large floor fan running for them and put out large chunks of ice in a shallow plastic bin for them to sip and wade in on hot days.
I'm partial to White Leghorns (WLH), Plymouth Barred Rocks (PBR) and Black Australorps (BA) for personality and great egg laying ability.
Thanks for the info!Welcome to BYC from Arizona! This is the place to be for all your chicken news, connections to helpful poultry folks and more!
I know Naked Neck do well here in AZ. Just for research you can look at the Murray McMurray online catalog for the breeds that are marked with the sun symbol - also good in confinement symbol. Not that you need to order from there - this is just one of MANY research resources I have used.
Thanks! I wish I could send you some of the heat, I'm, getting tired of it.110 in November?!let me pack my bags

I am all for being prepared, it's one if the best ways to start. I've made a lot of mistakes from being inpatient, not researching enough before I got started. So, definitely research all that you can especially for the coop process.
I also live in California but it's getting cold... maybe you can send some sun my way?
Wishing you the best of luck!
