Hi, I'm Shannon, and yesterday, my son and I brought home four ducklings from his kindergarten class. I have only ever had one bird in my life and that was a parakeet 30 years ago, but I'm determined to grow these babies up! I don't know what kinds they are (I'm hoping that his teacher will get back to me on what breeds she got eggs from), but they're adorable.

I've been wanting to get chickens since we moved from the suburbs out to the country, but hubby has been against it (he says they're too dirty). He didn't say no to the ducks though! So I'm hoping this is the start of being more self-sustaining, with meat prices going through the roof.

Anyway, here's a couple pics of our now 4-day-old ducklings having a quick bath while I cleaned out their box this morning. I put about 2 inches of water in the bottom of the tub so they could still stand if they wanted to, but they had a ball. I'm pretty sure it was their first swim! Next time, I'll use my good camera on the "sports" setting, they're too wiggly for cellphone pictures hahaha!

Welcome to BYC!

How adorable are they!!! Definitely do some posting in our ducks section for help from our duck experts. Liz has given you the link.

Enjoy these cutie pies and welcome to our flock!

Thanks everyone! I did post this better picture in the duckling pics thread :) I let them have a little (highly supervised) bath this morning, in about 2 inches of water in the tub for less than 10 minutes. They had lots of fun! Then I dried them up and put them back under the heat lamp, and they cleaned themselves up nicely :)

Welcome to the site and very cute ducklings! You've already been given links to a couple threads regarding ducks. Best of luck!

What sweet little faces!! You never think they could get into any trouble.

Tell your husband ducks are much dirtier than chickens - they can poo just about in every direction, and they poo very often. Plus they make a mess out of the waterers and their brooder.
