Nice birds, neighbor! I have a couple girlies like these too. Mine are mixed, but they're the best broodies I've got! How about yours?

I just got them this week from my neighbor. The older hen, Salsa, had chicks near as big as she was that were hatched in the spring. She's the one that layed my first egg.

I plan to let her sit again in the spring. I want to trade any new pullets for fresh stock. I think my neighbor just let them make babies any old way and they may all be -verrry- closely related. If I have calculated right I have room for two more! Chile, the littlest one, is supposed to be still a pullet. Her face and comb are paler than Salsa's. I'm hoping she starts to lay pretty soon too.

Hi All Of You New Mexican Chicken Lovers!

I read all through these pages and was surprised to see that I had never introduced myself.....I thought for sure I had.......(son los anos, I guess!) I must have intro'd myself to different people individually and not seen this thread.

My names Deb,and I live with my family in Alamogordo, NM and have for the last six years. We have no plans to ever leave the Land of Enchantment!

Our current flock consists of a lot of different chicken breeds; our regular layers, (Buff Orps, Australorps, Leghorns, barred Rocks) and some rare breeds, Derbyshire Red Caps and Egyptian Fayoumi's being our latest additions. (Oh! And 10 bronze turkey poults.)

My favorite chicken of all time, I think, has got to be our Malaysian Serama's. They are the tiny bird with the big heart. Tons of personality and attitude, but very loving and affectionate. I have been collecting and incubating eggs since spring and have hatched a bunch of babies. If anyone in NM is interested in adding any Serama's to their flock let me know! I have 65 egg in two incubators right now!

To all my NM chicken lovers... I have been trying to find out how to get my flock npip cert.. It has been a nightmare. I keep getting shuffled between an extension guy at NMSU and the livestock board in Albuquerque. I keep getting told there is no poultry industry in NM despite Privett in Portales. The guy at NMSU is Dr. John Wenzel. He will offer a class on testing your own bird for cert. If enough people request it. His number is (505) 646-3019. I am a vet and should not have to take this class and they are still giving me the run around. Maybe NM chicken lovers need to make some noise. dak

Dak, we're with you on this. How many people does he need in order to have class held?

Unsure. He gets more unhappy every time I call. He just took over for someone who retired. He is pretty clueless about NPIP paperwork, but has sat in on one testing workshop. He seems to think I'm a solitary chicken nut. I finally got Dr. Joe Baker of the livestock board involved. Now they both think I'm a nut making their life difficult. If it doesn't moo the livestock board isn't too interested.

Well, we'll just have to show them there are more chicken nuts in NM than they ever imagined! I did have to chuckle about the "If it doesn't Moo" statement.

My husband has been talking about getting certified. We just hadn't gotten around to looking into it yet. Let me talk to him and see what kind of noise we can start to make. Do you happen to have email addresses for either of them and what is Dr. Baker's phone number?

I'm just a newbie chicken owner, and haven't heard about certification--what does it mean?

thanks!

I wonder how many Dr. John Wenzels there are in NM? My vet in Silver City is Dr. John Wenzel... I could give him a holler at his clinic here in Silver and ask.

Dr. Baker's number is 505-841-6161, but I can guarantee he will refer you to Dr. Wenzel. I don't have email addresses.

jossanne- likely they're one and the same. He only seems to be available on certain days at NMSU.

BellaLulaFarm- NPIP is a nationwide programt to certify flocks to be free of two different species of Salmonella. It is a blood test, and only takes a couple minutes to run if you have the testing supplies. Some states send a person to your facility. NM does not do this. You have to take a class to test your own birds. Supposedly, as a vet, I should not have to take this class, but I still seem to be running into major apathy due to the lack of interest in poultry in NM.
