New Mexico

awwwww, I love stripey chicks! Very cute.

Congratulations on the induction into chickening. May it give you much joy!

Question: Does anyone have any suggestions of sources for organic chicken feed in the Albuquerque area? I hate the idea of paying shipping, but I want organic eggs.

Village Mercantile in Corrales got their chicks today. They have about 10 breeds. I got 2 Rhode Island Red and 2 Ameracauna. I'm officially now an urban chicken farmer.

So cute! We got 6 from them today too! 3 black australorps and 3 light brahmas.

theres about 3 stores that carry ranch way feed. They make organic feed and one with no corn no soy which is also organic. They can special order it probably if they dont already carry it

I went in and saw the Corrales Village Mercantile chicks today on my way home, but I'm going to hatch my own later after the coop is built. Soooooo tempting.

The breeds I saw there were Buff Orpington, Red Sex-Link, Speckled Sussex, Black Minorca, Ameraucana (Easter Egger), Black Australorp, Brahmas and Rhode Island Reds. I was really entranced by the deep mahogany-colored chicks.

Should I put antibiotic powder in the water for the new chicks? A person who was looking at the chicks when I was at the feedstore buying my chicks on Thursday suggested I add some antibiotic powder to their water for the first week if the feed I had didn't already have it. When I got home I checked that my Feed and Grow was not medicated. I have not gone back to the feed store (Village Mercantile in Corrales) for it yet but just wanted to get people's feelings about using it. How do I know when to use it otherwise? My wife phoned me at work to tell me that one of the chicks seems lethargic and not hanging out with the other 3. When she opened the lid to hold it, it made no effort to escape, the way the other 3 did. Being new to raising chickens, I don't really know what to look for.
