My daughter purchased her mini mare last sep, already bred, this is her first colt, so I was very nervous about the birth. She snuck off yesterday, and had her baby all by herself.
Anyway here he is, and if anyone know what color he is chime in, she is registered as 'silver bay' looks bluish at her points, I believe the stallion was a paint of some color, will have to look him up again.
Also looking for name suggestions, other then uncle sam, with a fourth of july theme.

Aww!

Mini foals are just adorable!

The mare is a Silver Bay, I'm thinking the foal may be, too. Foal colors can be radically different from the color they wind up as adults, particularly with Minis. I'm remembering a foal that looked like a palomino at birth, that finished out black!

Minis are notorious for losing foals at birth (frequently due to the foal not getting out of the sac, something that is rare in larger breeds), which is why their owners are usually so obsessive about being present at a foaling. Perhaps this foal's name should have something about Independence in it, since the mare managed to do it on her own?

Thanks so much, I was wondering if he wouldn't end up the same color as her, there is a silver/blueing tinge to him also.
I was so worried about her, been watching her like a hawk, there was never any waxed, no redness or loosing in the rear end, and my service slip said she was exposed from may thru sep.. I left to work for a couple of hours she was in the pasture with my paso fino mare (note the mini can pretty much slip out whenever she wants to but rarely does, and if she does it is to walk into the barn, Anyway, came home she wasn't in lower pasture, quick glance into upper, can't see her. Check grain bin, and barn, no little horse. I looked at my mare and asked her where is little horse (what I call her, I always swore I would never have one, lmao) she started paceing up the south fence line screaming, so I went aroud barn up hill, I saw her standing htere, but she still looked pregnant, then when I walked up found himj on the ground, I almost passed out! I had to call in reinforments to carry him down hill and lead her, her normally sweet friendly nature turned mother bear, and she was not happy. But once I got them saftly in small fiend she settled down to being a mom again. Just relieved it is over, they both seem to be doing great.

Very cute minis! I actually think your little guy is probably a silver dapple... a black horse with the silver gene. Your mare is most definitely a silver bay... the silver gene dilutes black, and so her mane and tail are flaxen colored, and her points (legs) are diluted to usually a brownish-bluish color. Do you know the colors of the sire? Was he a palomino or buckskin? Keep in mind, mini colors are notorious for being wrong on registration papers, and there are tons of genes that will hide on them. Seeing a horse in pictures or in person is usually a better bet of knowing what genes they carry color wise. Your colt very much reminds me of a smokey silver dapple colt I had a few years back.

I do think your little guy is a silver dapple. He just really looks like one to me. Bunnylady is very correct... minis are also notorious for being born one color, and deciding later to change it up! It doesn't happen all the time, but it does often enough that we tend to keep an eye on them until we're sure what color they are. I have an 8 year old mare I'm still trying to figure out. Her genetic possibilities are huge, and since she does carry a varnish roan appy gene, it just makes it that much harder.

Don't worry about your girl turning into momma bear... in a few days she should calm down, and go back to her normal self, for the most part. It's very common for new moms to go into protective overdrive for a bit, till they get used to having their little alien around, and realize not everything is out to get him. I was lucky with my maiden mare this year too... once we got her colt out (she had some trouble, he's was a big baby). She took to being a mom like she's done it many times. Sounds like your girl and my girl took the same motherhood class!

Thanks so much, they sure have more color names then the other breeds I have delt with! I believe he was a silver dapple pinto, I found him on a website off of his name when I purchased her, but now can't find it, can you look up horses on the amha website?

That would be great, wish I would have printed info and picture when I found it the first time, or at least saved the webiste!
name is hpm Wrapped in Silver #A190417.
Is there a time limit to register foal? Have to be done in a certain number of days or months? I don't see anything on this slip. I guess I need to check out the registries webpage.
Thanks so much for the help!

Precious! I like the idea of using something pertaining to Independence in his name. We have a baby donkey born just before Mother's Day our first large animal baby and I know what you mean about being anxious, we were too, but Penny the Jenny had her little "Petunia" all by herself also and was most likely better off because of it! LOL! She probably would have gotten to much help to do her any good! Mom is brown Dad was much lighter, Petunia is not grey at all any more but is much lighter brown than Mama at this point. I have been wondering just what her final adult color might be. Thanks for sharing!
