thank you, these are our first chickens that have done well and I know I worry about them ALOT. I just dont want to be the cause of them having any problems because I dont know what I am doing. I love that yall are all so informative and helpful. It sure does make me feel better.Cooked or raw eggs will help her because they are so high in protein and the shells have calcium..I don't know if cooking loses protein or not, but you're seriously over worrying this whole thing. You could feed her golden nuggets and she's still going to look rough for a little bit. Just relax and she will be right in no time. Feeding a really good diet will obviously help, but she's fine.
hopefully i can limit as much as possible. we had HORRIBLE luck with our first set of chickens and had to loose the entire flock. We spent a year trying to find our right set. I love that we have a mating set and an extra female for my rooster. I raised him from an egg and he is the only true success that we have had in the past year. I have grown very fond of him, although we wouldnt have minded if we had no roosters. Just now I cant let him go. Rotten lil bugger done grew on me!!Well yeah. I used to do the same thing. But there's so much you just can't worry about. And you always have to remember that something at some point will inevitably go terribly wrong, but that's part of keeping chickens.
we got our first chickens for my daughter to do her FFA project. next thing we know they were sick and there is no vet around here that takes chickens. then the state cam out. we were at the point of feeding our beautiful silkie with an eye dropper, her face was swollen and she had a hard time breathing. soon all of the chickens started sneezing and getting all congested to the point where they couldnt see and was suffering horribly. we couldnt do anything except try to treat the symtoms until the state test came back. we ended up having to put them down. it was so sad and we thoughtit would have broken her spirit. we waited the told time and began to start over. she was given a baby turkey and we purchased several more chicks (including my rooster now Simon). we were loosing babies daily and couldnt figure out what we were doing wrong. so many tears and up all night trying to save lil ones. then what did make it was all roosters and a turkey...this was NOT a good combination at all. the person we got the chicks from was letting us trade the roosters for hen (which i do belive was to much changing with out a slow addition into the flock-whih of course caused its own problems). finally we took all of them back and was just going to give up. when she showed me simon-which was one of the first roosters we had to take back.he was in a coop with only his mate, whe had been having trouble handling him, but when she handed him to me we all had to laugh because he sat down and just rode on me like he did when he was so little, we had to laugh because it was like he remebered me. so of course we have decided to try one last time. we now have Simon, his mate Janette, and he has another hen so he doesnt wear Janette out and we named her Miss Triss. We did not have them long before Janette began to get very broody and now we have 4 lil baby chicks. we are rushing to finish the large coop so they can all be free and wonder around. We love them to be free range, but everytime they are out we have a set of hawks that come for dinner and we cant have that. so that is our chicken story and where we are now. I realize we dont have controll over as much as we humans wish we did, but I helped Simon out of his egg. and none of them choose to be born and raised by us and i feel it is our responsibility to at least do the best we can. I am hoping that the worrying will let up soon and i am so happy that everyone here is so informative and doesnt mind sharing experience. I just wish i knew how to find information on here better. I am sure I will soon though!!What happened to the original flock? I don't have any of the chickens I started with...Every female buff orpington I've had ends up with a prolapsed vent, I can't stop it...just stopped getting them after 6 purchased from different places at different times did it. I've had random animals make off with 12 birds at once...it happens. It is the nature of chickens. Don't give up and try not to worry yourself to death. I used to worry all the time about this or that...until I realized so much of it I have no control over.
I am only allowed to keep Simon. my hubby is worried about them fighting. I havent found anything to prove him wrong yet and we just got 4 new babies, so I suppose I have a lil bit of time to figure it out still....we will see!!I find all rosters grow on me for one reason or other. This one's pretty, that ones friendly, this one is good with the hens, this one doesn't crow until late in the day, you gotta watch that our like me you'll end up with a rooster farm. Lol
