Good afternoon,
New member, though not entirely new to the community.. you guys have all been a grand help as to date.. and well rather than lurking in the shadows, figured to join in the
splendor.
Wife and I have wanted chickens for many years but always waiting for that perfect parcel of land and the right time.. or more time, or .. well there just kept being more reasons not to, than to do so.. well, we had our minds made up this past fall to just go for it.
My sister has had chickens for years, and had a problem with her new roo over the winter, massacring a few batches of chicks. Between wanting our own, and wanting to get her a few new surprise chicklets; we figured it was worth diving in.
We mulled over coop designs, possible breeds, opened discussions with local chicken owners.. and then come spring.. well.. kinda thought it wouldn’t happen with the pandemic and all.
Had nearly forgotten our plans come mid-March when our first batch of eggs was ready.. and everything took off from there. We’re still learning, still building, changing things up and testing what works for us and our girls, and what does not. Certainly a learning curve, but it has been a fun adventure so far.
At current we have 15 chickens. Our oldest are black copper marans or olive eggers: Our handsome Ez(merelda) as well as
Cheeky(f), Eyebrows(f) and Crazytown(f).
behind them by 3 weeks are:
-3 black lace Wyandotte: Buffy the EggLayer(f), ?(F), ?(F).
-1 mystery australorp: Jet(f)
-4 barred rock: Penguin(f), Swiper(m) and the jailbirds(m/f)
And 3 new additions, 3 adorable 4wk partridge silkies; Hawk (believed to be a Roo), Wren and Sparrow(believed to be hens), since only one of our barred rock hens is sociable with us and our daughter tries so hard for them to love her, is so responsible in taking care of them and enamoured with them at such a young age. Already Wren is quite friendly with her, as Penguin was at the same age.
We did start out with 17 eggs overall, had 15 hatch, lost our gorgeous wandering sweetheart maran Roo named Roo to 40*c heat when he got the older ladies and his brother lost in a neighbours yard with not enough shade or water for the 5 of them. My sister picked out a silver lace sweetheart of a Roo, and an australorp hen to take back to her flock and will probably soon be getting two barred rock roo’s for the freezer.
Late 30’s carpenter, mid thirties nurse, 1 acre near Lindsay, Ontario. Our hobbies include art, aquaria, reading, agriculture, electronics, our 2 1/2yo daughter, our fur babies (4 pups, 1 cat, 2 rabbits)and attempting to be more and more self-sustainable while bringing our daughter up more aware.
