New Peafowl owner with ?s (Updated Pics on Growth Changes)

Phoenix is feeling much better. So good in fact that he is off on an adventure with his best bud Skyflower.

Along the way they met a nice couple that invited them to an afternoon party.

Phoenix meets a spunky redhead, she would go but said the older hens won't let her.

They arrived at the party to find out it is a watermelon tasting party. Everyone was moving from melon to melon tasting and commenting on which they liked the best.

Afterward the peas decided to go dancing.

Both Skyflower and Phoenix have been having a great day. They were so relaxed they even took a nap near my feet. (I missed the opportunity to get Phoenix in his fan pose earlier. He would not do it after I got the camera out.)

thankyou

Have to admit I was worried about whether they would go up in the coop being this is their very first free range day. I think they are smarter than the chickens cus they figured out the way of the ramp faster than the chicks. They roosted on top of their baby pen making very content happy sounds.

When I opened the baby pen cus they are both too big for it and Phoenix finally is healed up enough; they were first intimidated by all the chickens rushing in when they wanted out. The chickens just acted like they were always part of the flock and pretty much ignored them. Berry, the pullet enamered with Skyflower, came over to say hello. The Peas stuck together like glue and when the pop door opened and the big chicken race began to the outside, they hung back and watched curiously. While most everyone was out they explored the main coop and slowly worked their way to the pop door, down the ramp, and to their adventurous day.

Both Phoenix and Skyflower picked up on the main duck n cover zones from watching the chickens. The big philadondria plant in the 4th pic is used as the nursery. All upcoming chicks are shown by the hens that this is the hang out spot for them. The plant gives cover and is like a jungle gym. Every chick hatched loves it. Ofcourse, poor Phoenix found out that it is unwise to get between a momma and her chick. (He accidently walked between them which scared the chick) Of the 2 broody hens he had to pick the Screamer to tangle with. She flogged and chased him, I yelled NO so she stopped; but poor Phoenix looked like a whipped puppy. After that both he and Skyflower made sure they gave the Screamer a wide berth. Incidently, Screamer has also earned nickname of Psycho Mom by the family even though this 1 chick is her first mommy experience. None of the other hens nor the roosters will mess with her.

It was so much fun watching them explore today. They already learned from the time in their play pen the warning calls made by the roosters and hens. Whether to look up or out where the rooster is looking and when to take cover. They gleamed seeds from the seed steems of the grass, dined on tender shoots, and feasted on juicy bugs. (yep we need to mow bad) Both are excellent bug catchers.

My they have grown in a week!

Phoenix has fully recovered:

Skyflower says, "LOOOK At MEEeeee!!!"

Skyflower, "Check this out! I am the most beautiful bird in the yard."
Phoenix, "Yer suppose to play coy cus she has the camera again"

yummy, grasshopper with salad

Hey, the feeder is open, lets go get some before the chickens eat it all.

Phoenix says, 'Hang on I dropped my bug."

Got here just in time, hurry up now I think I here them coming.

Great Dining, now it is time to Fly!

Why is that they always do the most amusing things when I do not have my camera handy?

I forgot to charge my camera battery so it was sitting useless on the table.

We were just finishing dinner and all at the dining table chatting away; when I noticed Skyflower coming up the steps for the very first time at the back door. The door is a glass sliding door so we can see out and they can see in. I spot him curiously peeking at us, then, following not to far behind is his buddy Phoenix. Phoenix is absolutely intrigued by being able to see what we are doing.

Suddenly! Energy bound and overly curious...the kittens coming running over to see the big birds at the glass door! Rugby tries to play with them but the glass prevents contact. ShyAnne gently slaps at the big birds and is transfixed by them. Phoenix tries to peck the kitties but they are protected as well. Phoenix is engrossed with the kittens trying to interact with them. His body poster is relaxed as he watches their silly antics. Skyflower however, is not too happy about the kittens! Skyflower goes into intimidation mode, fluffs up his feathers, fans, shakes, and strutts all the while keeping a sharp eye on the kittens. Unfortunately, Skyflower was not paying attention to the limited space as he was backing up and stumpled down one step. He recovered quickly and strutted right back at the kittens.

We couldn't help but watch & giggle at the silly antics at this first meeting. I could not help regretting not charging my camera battery.

Both Peas are getting bigger and more confident. Yesterday, Phoenix discovered he could fly to the top of the roof of the port cover the travel trailer is parked under. And tonight they had another first....They finally are roosting on the high roosts in the main coop! Yep, no more roosting on top of the baby hutch. This means I can finally move it out which I have been wanting to do as everyone likes to jump up on it and poop all over it which stinks even though I scrape it.

I did get a few picks yesterday evening of them munching, munching, and more munching while free ranging. While the camera was working not one interesting thing happened. The Peas waited til I ran out of battery juice.

Oh, I don't know how I missed your post earlier-but I'm so glad to see that Phoenix is fully recovered.
They look great, and they've really grown!

Hope you recharge and get more pictures for us soon!

thanks
Yes, I will post more pics once the camera is back in action. I would love to get a new pic of Phoenix displaying. Phoenix is looking very good now.
Skyflower is getting flashier with all the new irredescent feathers coming in. Noticed blue coming in now. Phoenix has some irredescent feathers but not as much as Skyflower.
