New Possum....on my Patio...

OMG!! Sorry for the guy but that sounds like one of those crazy stories they read on the radio in the mornings about unbelievable things people do! I couldn't shoot it anyway, it was too cute! If it's back again tonight or I find out it's getting into my backyard I will borrow the trap and see about catching it...it was so fat and round Beeky might be right about babies in the pouch! I went out back 3 times in the rain last night to make sure he wasn't sniffing around my chickens, lol!

I think you need to call "rooster red" for this one

I guess I am lucky where I live we don't usually have these problems in the winter cause they be in hibernation. One night I came home only to find one run into my garage. Possums and racoons thrive in city enviornments. I personally wouldn't want to start anything with a possum, they have the whole row of nasty little sharp teeth! I don't know if it is true they will play dead if threaten. They remind me of a great big ugly sewer rat!

I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as it can find an easy meal it won't be eating chicken.

They have been know to go after eggs and small chicks, but a grown chicken is too much of a threat for them, unless they are starving.

I thought about calling you, lol!! It looked just like the one walking but it's tail was stubby and stuck straight out behind it, not up or dragging, just straight out! It was sort of cute, in a weird possum sort of way, lol! I did put more cat food in the bowl so it wouldn't be hungry and think about a chicken dinner, lol!!!

I agree with what rooster red and a few others have said. Possums are more opportunists than predator. My cat is terrified of them, whereas she goes after every other critter that comes around; so I wouldn't worry about the cat and the possum tangling. Cats are usually pretty good about picking their battles.
Interestingly enough, I have only seen one possum on this farm, out in the boondocks, whereas I saw them all the time in the city....better and easier pickins. Now armadillos we have, in large numbers too. I don't worry about them either.
