New puppy dying of Parvo... (BOWEL MOVEMENT PICTURES WARNING)

the vaccs that are at a store other then a vet are the same as the vets use..they only tell you that so you buy from them..may be a different brand, but if the vets are buying that brand its the same thing..I have heard of many many HS dogs having parvo..they have no idea what they bring in on a daily bases, they do not quarantene, they put new dogs in with ones that have been there..and I really wonder if they get vaccinated as really half the staff dont know crap. Many dogs are up for adoption the day after they arrive, sense parvo takes 10-14 days to show symptoms, many of these dogs are in new homes before you know they are sick..HS are a good thing, but the care practices some of them have are a little suspect.

Our vet doesn't charge us for the vaccines, so what would the ulterior motive be?

Also, there are several different brands of vaccines. The vet I used to work for certainly did not use the same brand of vaccine as the one from the feed store. I do not trust feed store vaccines and also do not like to give multiple vaccines at once. I get my parvo and distemper vaccines seperately and give them at least 2 weeks apart. I do not vaccinate for anything else but rabies because most of the other items in the vaccine are either for diseases you never see, that are not that bad, or have very limited immunity (like 2 months or something like that for lepto ... if you happen to hit the right strain).

Vaccines are very important for rabies, distemper and parvo, but you have to keep your dog's immune health in mind too.

I really hope your puppy continues to improve. I have heard many stories of puppies getting prompt and proper treatment pulling through and doing great.

Cara, your vet sounds awesome! I wish I could find one like that around here. They seem to care more about the $$ than the animals. If I could only find one that I really felt cared about my dogs and their health, I would not complain about the high cost, but I have not yet found them so I will continue to complain loudly

She is still alive but they said she seems worse, but that worse could mean that she'll feel better soon.

Oh man, I just read this thread. My heart goes out to you and I cannot imagine what you are going through.

Best wishes and best of luck with your pup.

vets dont recognise owner administered vaccines because many people will use a vaccine even if it arrives at room temperature.

Sounds like the shelter slipped up on telling you to have her last booster given. They should have one every 3-4 weeks untill 16 weeks old. So she missed 2 boosters. If you had her for a month, she didnt get the parvo from the shelter. She got it from somewhere she was taken or brought in on shoes. Incubation period for parvo is 7-14 days so its not from the shelter.

I hear that! I'm actually volunteering at a vet clinic right now, and every day that I go I have to restrain myself from punching one of the Dr's there. He bascially came right out and told me that vet school isn't worth it. He's also flat out said if you don't have the money, he's not going to do the work.

A few weeks ago, this little Chiuahuah came in. They gave her less than a 50% chance of living, and you could hear her rattling breath all the way across the room. She had been in labor for 48 hours, and given birth to two dead puppies. The owners then waited another 48 hours before bring her in. Sounds horrible right? Well, then he says that its owners called when they started to realize she was having problems. He told them she probably needed a c-section. They said they didn't have all the money, and wouldn't be able to pay in one lump sum. He told them that he wasn't going to do it then. That poor little dog and both of her puppies died because its all about money with him, and that's just one example. He does things like that all the time.

If you don't have a passion for the work, then you shouldn't get into it. Its not about making money, its about helping the animals. I graduate highschool next May, and I'm going to get my Bachelors degree and go on to vet school. When I'm a vet, I'm not going to do it for the money. If someone can't pay, oh well. The animals shouldn't suffer for that, and the prices shouldn't be so inflated.

You sound like you will make an awesome vet! I commend you and hope everything goes REALLY well for you.

Around here, you cannot get anything done without payment up front. AND the vets will not see you for an emergency if you are not already a client. I had an emergency with my beloved Jenna after moving here and before establishing a veterinary relationship (I had NOT idea that I needed to take her in to establish myself as a client in order to receive emergency care). I had to drive 3 hours to the nearest emergency clinic. The delay in care may be the reason she passed away a few months later, may be the reason I am now without my best friend. A big piece of me died right along side that noble dog.

She's coming home today!!!!

They came in this morning and she was sitting up looking around
