New puppy love: Beware of bringing home those cute deceiving predators!

my guardian dogs are.
1. Australian Cattle Dog- Border Collie mix 7 years old, named Miki
2. Australian Shepherd-Pit bull mix, 2 years old, named Zip
3 German Shepherd-Black Lab mix. 6 years old, named June

June we just adopted 2 years ago. she was surrendered to the pound because she killed the owners poultry. she was so happy to come home with us and when we corrected her about 3 times about chasing the chickens she stopped. thats the great thing about GSD's, they are SO Smart. she also has the example of the other 2 dogs and has learned from their example.
the first 2 dogs i have listed learned the ropes from a senior dog Momo,(Australian Shepherd pure bred) who passed a little over a year ago.

:goodpost:
I don't think people should beware of getting a new puppy as much as they need to be aware that dogs need training.
It's no surprise that without any or much of any that they're gonna kill your chickens again and again and again.
Dogs are a responsibly not just a throw away object when they do something wrong.
You are SOOO right!! I haven't let any of my dogs over the years in very long with my chickens. My Husky mix chased a hen that had escaped the run years ago and scared her to death while I watched. Didn't actively kill the hen.
ALWAYS wanted a full blooded GS and mine is now 16 months old. She is NOT a chicken killer! She is still learning and getting over being a puppy.
Somebody ended up with a very nice dog, YOUR beautiful cream sable German shepherd puppy. Sorry, MY dogs come before chickens any day of the week.
Something ELSE...I keep my dogs in the house and they have "chores" outside. The most important thing to guard is ME and MINE.
Every good dog and every good horse I have ever owned wasn't that good in the beginning, but became that good bc I spent time with them.
When "Eva" (GS) wanders too far while I am cleaning stalls, when she comes back, she gets to sit in a stall while I clean, either on a leash or loose. When she is naughty, she goes in her Great Dane sized crate, and she isn't loose at night bc she still chews on some things. She also Eats in her crate, so that my 12yo Lab mix doesn't have to compete.
Btw, my GS/Collie ("Xena", 1998-2008, RIP) would pout if we killed possoms and wouldn't come in one night guarding a baby robin.
You cannot pigeon hole dogs and you NEVER know what they are really capable of until they have been a member of the family for awhile and can read you like a book.

God Bless you for taking a 6yo!!! Too many dogs, not enough dedicated owners. I got Eva bc "Pyg" (12yo, Lab/GSxPitbull) has slow growing cancer in her right foot, and is having trouble doing her "Pyg jobs." Got Pyg at 8 weeks old and will keep her until her dying day. She has a massive English vocabulary and takes me to the door to let our 7 cats go in/go out. Pyg has figured out that Eva is here to also protect HER as well as the rest of us.

My best dog to watch my flock. She's a red nose pit mix and chases off other dogs and predators. My chickens aren't afraid of her, they even come right up to her to say hi.

My best was a pit too. I miss that old girl.

My current dogs are largely hunting breeds. I keep my current dogs and birds separated 100% of the time.

It is sad to give up on the dog rather than exercise training and or separation options.

My beagle is kept separated too. She has a hunting drive and I know would kill a chicken in a heart beat.

My puggle is great with the chickens, they chase each other and have a fun time. The Jersey giant boys like trying to intimidate her, but she isn't scared of them so they don't bug her.
