They are intensely intelligent. However, they are herding/working dogs, which means that they are bred to be independent thinkers and decision makers, not followers.
My sister has a female Border Collie. She is a fabulous dog, but requires HOURS of exercise a day. If not, she gets into a frenzied state where she just doesn't know what to do with herself. She is busy all the time, night and day. I don't know when the dog sleeps!
If you tend to have the neighborhood kids at your house a lot of the time, this can be annoying to herding dogs. All those kids running in all those different directions is very frustrating, and your dog may start nipping at and herding the kids to keep them together. Some kids aren't very stoic and will run home to tell Mommy that your dog attacked them!

my best friend has had border collies since our kids were little. they were great but persistant. dale (her male) used to round up the kids for us, the chickens, the horses, visitors anything or any one. she never taught him that it was just inbred. he also obsessed about "the ball", he would chase the ball until he was passing out. then want to do it some more. great dogs ... highly energetic... good luck she's cute as heck!

OMG! That sounds just like my girl (Yellow Lab)- she too obsesses about 'the ball' (and the stick, and the rock, and the blade of grass, and the [insert anything that she thinks can be thrown and retrieved here]...lol. Silly dogs.

She loves the ball, also. She has buddied up with my 15 month old and they play fetch all day long it seems like. He throws the ball she brings it back , he throws it agian. They are going to be good buddies. She hasnt created to many problems, I belive she isnt out of anyones sight long enough to think about mischief. She is going to be my duaghters dog obedience and agility project for 4-H. I dont see her being left without enough exercise do to my three kids to chase after all day.

My daughter has a border collie and for her she is the best dog. She's very smart and learns quickly. This dog went through collage will Melinda. She doesn't have any bad habits and is mostly a house dog. Maybe she is the exception to the rule, but She not hyper or neurotic. She is very happy just to lay around with Melinda and her husband. She's also a great traveler. She travels with Melinda when she come to visit us which is a 5 hour trip. She sleeps the whole way. She does mind, you tell her to lay down and stay she does. I guess Melinda was lucky.

Our neighbors have an Aussie mix. He looks to me to also be part BC, but they only know he is an Aussie mix. He is an absolutely wonderful dog though. We love him. He is a high intensity dog, but so very good natured, you just can't help but love him. I also have a friend with a retired show Aussie. She's a great dog too. They just have too much coat for me or I might would have one myself. Good luck with your Sassy.

She is a cutie! We had a german shepard that would herd the goats into a small pen. Not because we wanted her to--she just did it. All day! The goats hated to see her coming. They finally got to the point where when they saw her they would just run into the pen!
