New Purina Feed

I had always used the regular Purina Layena and when I saw the new omega 3 I recently bought a bag. I have six chickens and they all seem to eat it the same as the other type. No difference. I used to give them a bit of flax seed for omega 3 and I do not when they are eating the new food. Probably will not buy it again even though I am very satisfied with it. The only reason is that when this bag is done I will continue adding the flax seed so will not need it. It is a bit more money because it is only 40 pounds.

i had my coupon for 6 wks before i could find the omega 3. My local TSC finally got it and it was $1 cheaper than regular Layena(but its a 40 lb bag) so with my coupon i only paid $11.99 for it. I really like the smaller pellets and so did my birds. At first i mixed it with Layena pellets and they would pick thru the feeder and eat all the Omega-3 pellets first. I probably wouldnt have tried it if it wasnt for the coupons. It seems like a good feed, but i dont like the 40lb bag.

The Purina Layena Plus "Omega 3"
Is said to increase the Omega Fatty Acids in eggs.

I wouldn't fall for the whole Layena Plus "Omega 3" feed.
Remember that if your chickens are out "free ranging" on green grass they are taking in Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

The only thing I read here that interest me is the fact it is a smaller pellet. I was wondering if it would work better for my bantams.I have them on crumbles but would love to feed pellets to everyone.I like crumble, but it seems to be wasted more. I was just thinking the other day it would be nice if the pellets were small like the rabbit pellets I feed.

The feed is supposed to yield darker yolks (due to marigold petals in the blend) and to not require additional oyster shell suplement for egg shells. I am on my third bag of feeding it to my girls. I still give supplemental calcium after getting fragile, thin shells by going by the feed's directions. I haven't noticed a darkening of the yolks...if there is any, it's minor. I'll probably continue to feed it to them as the increase in Omega-3 fatty acids is a benefit.

I started mine on the omega 3 when I got my first egg since I too had coupons. I have 23 chickens and the 40lb bag lasted about a week and 5 days which seemed to fast for me so the last bag I bought is just regular layena and the 50lb bag seems to be going faster than the 40lb bag of the omega 3.

EDIT: I don't eat fish so the omega3 seems like a good idea for me.

+1. A snake oil gimmick. Suddenly the world needs 'omega 3' or we're all going to waste away and die of malnutrition and get dumber as it happens! Chickens shouldn't have survived since they weren't getting their daily dose of omega 3 (yet they have)!

35 years ago it was 'eggs are going to kill you!', all of a sudden it's 'eat your eggs!'.

Unfortunately too many people fall for these kinds of things and keep it going (believe it or not, there's a huge number of people who fall for those moronic e-mails from some dolt in africa asking to share millions of dollars! Hmmm...makes you wonder which is the actual dolt...the victim or the jerk who's trying to steal your money. Want to learn more about that? Go here http://www.419eater.com/index.php )
