New Rat litter! NewER pics pg 4!

I don't know if I can find Aspen bedding...I've never seen it before. I can ask at the feed store, but I have a feeling they'll look at me like I'm from another planet. I have my chicks on pine and they're fine. Ugh, now I'm back to where I was...wondering if pine is OK.

Well, I work at a petstore and am the rodent/reptile expert. We DO actually use pine, though I want to switch the rats to aspen, but they've been using pine for like 20 years and haven't had any problems ever. I'm still wary of it just because I've heard that it can cause respiratory infections, but so far, so good. So I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if you used it. But I wouldn't go on a rat forum and tell everyone you use pine, lol. They'd probably eat you alive.

Cedar will cause respiratory illness and more...it is not good for any small animal. Pine, in every rat book I have read, is safe. I had all of our rats, rabbits, etc etc on pine or Aspen and never had a problem. I even used the cob bedding with no problems.

I think more problems come from lack of ventilation and so forth ... IMHO.
