new research debunks trad views on nutrition

The primary value of organic foods is not so much what IS in it, but what is NOT in it. It's the residual pesticides and herbicides that many are trying to avoid with organic foods.

Yes this is why I try to buy organic.
I figure I have a better chance with organic, even though their have been producers cheating

I'm not opposed to food having fewer residual pesticides and herbicides in them. I think that should be the goal of all our food. However, I have no way of knowing that the organic food in the store has less pesticides and herbicides in them compared to non-organic food. At that point, it's just a matter of belief in the organic marketing which we know is not all that reliable.

:idunnoI have worked in a few hospitals. None of them bought organic food. Maybe it comes down to cost and availability of organic food, but it was never an issue even discussed for our patients. Regular commercial food was considered fine.

Having said that, I grow as much food as I can in my backyard raised bed gardens. I don't use any pesticides or herbicides. I don't use any chemical fertilizers. I make my own chicken run compost fertilizer and that works great for me. FWIW, I am that organic farmer with high standards for myself.

Does anyone else's head spin when they see organic products packaged in plastic ?

Bottled water has a use by date or best before date as that is when too many chemicals from the plastic will have leached into the water, so how do the organic producers stop the chemicals leaching from their plastic packaging into their products ?

As far as pesticides and pesticide residues are concerned if people knew that potato farmers grow a seperate crop for themselves because of the amount of chemicals used in growing a "normal crop" of potatoes then everyone would be either growing their own or buying certified organic potatoes.

either growing their own or buying certified organic
there is an alternative in most cases; farmer's markets, CSAs (community-supported-agriculture businesses), local growers who have signed up to alternative schemes (e.g. 'regenerative organic' or 'real organic') or none, but who grow for health or nutrient value etc, rather than for yield.

Montgomery and Bilke What your food ate 2022 has lots of examples of regenerative agriculture proving profitable for farmers who pursue it, e.g. Blue Dasher Farm in S Dakota, with description of how they manage it.

How can there be so many food items in every grocery store in every state of the country marked organic when it takes forever to grow things organically in such large quantities? Then yes, as someone else mentioned, it's all packaged in plastic. I think we're being scammed.

Most of the organic food I have available is from another country. Only a couple % of the USA farms are organic. By me crops are grain that is exported or made into fuel.

It's not so much that organic produce is fraudulant, it's that the hype could lead one to believe that the produce is clean. A little bit of research will show that there are no clean crops and haven't been for many years.
So, organic is less dirty hopefully in many cases.
Are we healthier eating organic crops? Some very mixed views on this topic and not really any long term research. Somehow I doubt it. I'm pro organic but not for personal health reasons. It must be better for everyone in the long run if we reduce the chemicals we use for pest management and growth rates given most are obviously poisons.
A wider view on the health for everyone is we couldn't grow the required volume of produce required to feed an expanding population of both us and our livestock without these chemicals and people dying of starvation knocks a very big hole in the better for everyone view.

My hope is people will form a more informed and rational choice about what they eat. There isn't much point in eating organic food if you finish the meal with a tub of ice cream, and/or eat pastries and biscuits all day. My belief is the biscuits/pastries/sweet stuff and junk food, are likely to kill me quicker than the chemicals found in the raw produce. I could be wrong.:p
