new research debunks trad views on nutrition

Folate is the real deal, folic acid is a synthetic.
This made no sense to me, because I didn’t know the word folate and vitamin B11 / folic acid is said to be an essential vitamin in my country. So I searched on the web for more info.

Translated from Dutch:
Folate and folic acid are different forms of vitamin B11. While there is a clear difference between the two, the names are often used interchangeably. In fact, there is a lot of confusion about folic acid and folate, even among professionals. However, it's important to know the difference because the two forms do not have the same effects on health. This article explains the difference between folic acid and folate.

Vitamin B11
Vitamin B11 is an essential nutrient that occurs naturally as folate. Folate serves many important functions in the body. For example, it plays a key role in cell growth and the formation of DNA. Low folate levels are linked to an increased risk of several conditions, including:
  • Elevated homocysteine: High homocysteine levels have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke (1, 2).
  • Birth defects: Low folate levels in pregnant women are linked to birth defects, such as neural tube defects (3).
  • Cancer risk: A lack of folate is also linked to an increased risk of cancer (4, 5).
That's why vitamin B11 supplementation is common. This nutrient is even required to be added to food in countries like the US, Canada, and Chile. The problem, however, is that supplements and fortified foods usually contain folic acid, not folate.

About 2 months ago, I made radical changes to what I eat... essentially, no UPF at all although that wasn't the purpose of the changes. This is after months/years of gradually moving toward less UPF - sort of because they are UPF.

Yesterday, I ate what I'm sure has a lot of UPF's. I noticed a drastic change in how I ate. I recognized that I was not interested in stopping even though I wasn't hungry anymore - was even a bit uncomfortably full. This hadn't happened in a very long time; so long that it felt strange although I remember doing it quite a lot before the changes. I enjoy the food we've been eating, at least as much as any other way I've eaten, but I don't keep eating it like this.

I don't think I'm explaining very well. I didn't do this with any such expectations. I brought ds food from a favorite fast food restaurant that isn't near where he now lives. Of course I knew it was essentially junk food but I wasn't trying to see effects or any such thing.
I embarked on a minimal UPF diet about a year ago. It's pretty hard I found especially if one doesn't really like cooking.
Oddly, I found the stuff they sell in the so called health food shops, particularly the animal products free offerings were often worse, as in more processed than the fast food stuff in the supermarkets. The strangest thing is the supermarket more deluxe offerings had more crap in them than the basic range.

Fortunately I do like cooking and without getting religious about it I eat very few UPFs.
I tend to make a big pot of beans, lentils, or steel cut oats (savory), once a week and then mix and match with various veggies and fish/meat/eggs during the week.
A friend of mine visited from Bangkok and brought me some spices so this week I have been living off aubergine/eggplant curry which I must say is quite delicious and set to become a staple for me.

There's a big drive to plant more red clover here because it's such an important source of food for the great yellow bumblebee, partly because of its protein content. Vetches too.

When they aren't eating all the raspberry flowers just before they set fruit 🤬 my chickens seem to have a thing for plants that are supposed to be toxic. Buttercups are always popular and recently they've been going for ragwort flowers 🤷‍♂️
I've had the chickens eating the raspberry flowers this year but not last year.

It's taken me a long time to wean myself off white chocolate of the worst type (packaged snack type bars) to 85% and above dark chocolate.
White Chocolate? OMG how could you? Terrible stuff! Remember the Milky Bar kid? Disgusting. White chocolate isn’t really chocolate at all.
Rant over.
I admit I find 85% a bit far in the other direction. I am content at about 70%.

What I tell people is it is a bean and I thought beans were supposed to be good for you.:p

I thought white chocolate was just sugar and fat. Hopefully cocoa butter as that fat, but... If a stick of salted butter is savory, white chocolate is its sweet equivalent. Welcome to the dark side!
