Hello everyone. I've just joined Backyard Chickens, as I have recently started hatching & breeding Silkies. I retired from nursing last year, & was looking for something to give me a new challenge in my "older age", & had thought about having a little flock of Silkie hens as pets .... but very quickly bought myself a new Brinsea incubator, along with coops & runs, heat plates, etc. My first hatching didn't go to plan at all .... I live in New Zealand, & I bought 6 Silkie eggs online in grey (which is not a recognized color here) ...... What actually hatched were 3 "chipmunk" chicks, 1 white, & two black chicks ...... which developed into 1 partridge Silkie with a straight comb ... 1 partridge Sizzle with a straight comb ... 1 partridge Silkie with walnut comb ... 1 black Silkie ... 1 black Sizzle ... & 1 white Sizzle!!! The breeder offered to send another 6 eggs in the color ordered .... I have never taken her up on that offer. I now also have a beautiful pure Silkie cockerel & a white hen, who I was told was just over a year old ..... Two weeks ago I hatched out 6 pure white Silkie chicks, out of my now 7 month old cockerel & his mate. The first 6 chicks, now 13 weeks old, are 4 cockerels, all crowing ... & one definite girl (the little black Sizzle, who is just adorable) ..... the jury is still out on the beautiful white Sizzle ..... I desperately want it to be a girl, but I have this sinking feeling it's a boy. I will be keeping my little black Sizzle (Lulu) & I want to keep the partridge Silkie boy (Zuni), because he has beautiful, rich coloring, a black breast, & is the sweetest little bantam. After posting up pics of him in a couple of online groups I belong to, I have had good feedback on him. Unfortunately, his crest is mainly black, with a peppering of orange, mainly towards the back. My avatar is of Zuni at 12 weeks old. He looks a tad darker than he actually is, as photo taken in the evening. I don't know anything about showing chickens, but I am thinking I might do that.
