I'm not sure where I should be writing this, as I am still very much finding my way around BYC. I've been concerned about my white adult Silkie girl, who is in with my young rooster (cockerel really, as he is only around 7-8 months old). This pair are the parents of my 2 week white Silkie chicks. Czarina regularly laid 3-4 little eggs each week. But just over a week ago, she stopped laying. I searched the long grass area in their large run, but no sign of eggs there. She hasn't shown any signs of being broody. Anyway, I also noticed that her poop was smaller in size (in nesting box) than it had previously been. I thought she might have stopped laying due to several very loud thunder storms we have had recently .... or to the fact that we had allowed 2 of our dogs into the area where their run is, but only under supervision & both were well-behaved. When I saw that Czarina had stopped laying, I stopped allowing the dogs in & no more thunder storms, but still no eggs. I got Czarina as an adult, about 3 months ago, & like our young rooster, Czar, she had never been handled, so whenever I go into their run, she hides under the coop. Today I took her favorite treat in .... grated carrot, apple, bran & vegetable oil mash, & she came over to get some. I was shocked to see that she appears to have lost quite a bit of weight, & her bottom is dirty, I did see her pooping just before that .... or maybe trying to poop ... that's when I saw her bottom was dirty. From a few feet away it looks like poop on her fluff. So now I am going to have to catch her, pop her into a carrier, bring her indoors to check her out, & gently wash & dry her .... I was thinking that the best way would be to wait until the two of them go into their coop, at around 9 p.m. tonight (it's now 1 p.m. & summer here) & then open the nest box lid where she sleeps, & lift her out. I know that Czar is going to be stressed by this, as she will also be (& me too), but I think this is a better option than chasing her around their large enclosure, with Czar pecking at my feet. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I should handle this or what might be wrong with her? I gave her some mashed egg today, in case she is short of calcium, & she ate a little amount .... She gets layer pellets, but hard to see how much she is eating, because she & Czar get it out of the bowl & spread it over the ground .... I have also seen her eating his pellets too. A couple of times a week, they get a treat, & then she has a large area of ground, with grass as well, to range over with Czar. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
