Welcome to BYC! I'd start by checking the local codes to see what restrictions are in your area.
You should read about space requirements per chicken next and then about housing. As N F C said 3 is a better start than two.

Hello, it's nice to have you here with us! First, make sure you're legally allowed to have a flock. If so, I'd recommend you get at least 3...that way if something should happen to 1 of them, you won't be left with an unhappy, lonely single.
