You're so lucky to have an electrician by trade in the family!

My hubby's mighty talented in that dept. - he has his degree in electrical engineering, but he's former Active Duty AF and now a USAFR C-17 pilot for his career. He's not current on electrical licensing tho', so he's not supposed to do the electrical stuff.

We're not lighting or heating our coops as the winter's tend to be relatively mild by OK comparison, but we are using clear corrugated panels for the South side of the roof for natural lighting.

This is the longest I've lived anywhere in my life! I grew up an "Army brat" (was born at Ft. Sill) and we moved on average every 3yrs when when I was a child. Due to family living in OK, we always went there for family vacations to visit them tho'. When I was 14yrs old, I went to live with my grandparents in a little BFE town just outside of Enid - even left the area in mid-'91 to move to AZ, then moved back to OK when my grandfather passed away so I could help my grandma.

I've been a transplant to the Pacific NW since mid-1997, but I left Enid once and for all back in 1995. Still have family all over OK and mainly in Garfield County tho' and go back to visit at least once a year!

I got a promotion to management with the loan company I worked for and was transferred to Reno, NV summer '95... then moved to AZ... and then TX... before finally moving to WA.

I'm here 'cuz I met hubby in early '97, we clicked, and I decided to give "us" a chance. We've been together ever since!

The relationships a great fit for us, but we're still debating this weather up here! LOL But, to be honest, I'd rather live here than in OK. It's extremely rare for us to have those wicked winds, extreme temps, or tornadoes to deal with.

My goodness have you been busy! I've lived her all my life. However, my parents and younger siblings moved to Texas in 1986 - The oil and aviation fields crashed - my dad got a job offer and took it. They live NE of Dallas in "no-man's-land" (Property in one town, actual address in a differet town and utilities in town - LOLOL) Lost my dad in 2005...my siblings and their children all live in Texas. I have one brother who lives here in Norman. There we 10 of us children - so my mom and dad had their hands full - plus our grandmother lived with us until she passes away a few years before my dad. We have family all over the state of Oklahoma - but not real close - we were always busy with our clan.

Congratulations on meeting your perfect match and I pray you have many, many joyous years together. Thank your husband for his service to us and this wonderful country we live in. My dad was a vietnam vet (100% disabled) - but that never slowed him down. Take care...

Reconstruction is officially under way...I'll get pics out as soon as I can. Wouldn't you know - we've had a drought all summer long - the worse since the dust bowl and the moment we decide to start building the Coop we get rain! LOLOL - So it's a few days here and a few days there...

We need the rain so bad, that we are going to enjoy having it - inspite of its' timing.

I've been reading your posts and enjoying them but thought it was neat that you were born at Ft. Sill, my son is there right now. He did his basic, AIT and will be going into tank training at Sill soon.

Gets even smaller between the Armed Forces!! We used to move from one station to another and still find people we knew from yet a previous station. I've since had nephews go through Ft. Sill for basics and friends sons/daughters go through there for basics as well. I've attended some of those graduations. I salute each and every one of the young men and women who go into our military! Tell your son "Thank you!" for me, will ya?

Since your rebuilding your coop you might want to look at this:
http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=open air poultry houses
http://www.archive.org/details/openairpoultryho00wood

According to the book these worked extremely well in Maine and Canada and were tested by many agricultural stations and universities.
Book quotes:
9 out of 10 chickens preferred an Open-Air Poultry House to an enclosed poultry house.
Enclosed poultry houses have increased amounts of disease and sickness.
What necessity is there in providing ventilation for a bird that lives in a tree?
