Hi everyone, on I turned my dog cage into my chicken coop. So far it is working out well. I let my 6 RIR out during the day to hunt and then lock them back up at night. I have lost a few to hawks but more to dogs that are strays. My information for raising chickens came from my mom who always had chickens when she was young. My mom recently passed away so now I need some new sages to help me the problems and to tell the funny stories to about my girls.

When losses to stray dogs, cats, predators become that frequent, it's time to switch from free ranging to keeping your flock safe in a secure covered sun. Otherwise you will continually be replacing them. Please check out the Predator forum for advice.

Agree with Diva there a covered run can be life or death if hawks are in view

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. This one may be of particular interest:
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.
