Good Morning Chickens Lovers ~

I am new to BYC and have just started my life with some 6 beautiful hens (2 of which may be roosters not sure yet)

. They are a mix between Amerucana (sp?) and cochin..

So far I have found some very interesting information on this website.. Thank you to all that contribute!!

Back to the possiblity of my two roosters.... when will I know for sure if they are roosters?? They are about 6 months old and I have not heard a "cock-a-doddle-doo" yet?? Do they not crow until they reach a certain age??

Also am I correct in thinking that the hens should start laying around 9 months old??

Hi chic-o-dee, Im chic-a-deee!!
Im new here too.
Ive learnt plenty here....I hear hens should start laying around 6months. Can vary with breeds.
Go to the forum index page & look up a subject...eg: laying hens. That should tell you.

Hi chic-a-deee! Thanks for the welcome.. I am in SW Florida. I am just concerned about the roosters, because we promised our neighbors (we live in a residential area) that we would not get roosters. but life is like a box of chocolates isn't it?? LOL

I will post pic soon. I have only had my hens for about 4 days..and we are still working on finishing their "NY Studio Apartment" HAHA, my husband went a little overboard with the coop..

from the Finger Lakes of New York! Very happy you joined us. As for the roo, they will crow when they feel like it. It doesn't get any simpler than that. As for the hens, it depends largely on breed and timing. Some breeds lay as early as 18 weeks (mostly production types). Also, as the weather turns colder, things slow down.
