Raising your chicks directly in the coop is a great idea but not with a heat lamp. Look up MHP in the articles section and make that instead. Good luck with your new flock.

Here here, down in the south central mountains of NM!! Love northern NM and are considering a move soon, thinking about Abiquiu, possibly Espanola.

I am not exactly sure of where you can get chicks but there are Tractor Supply stores in Albuquerque, Bosque Farms, Bernilillo, and I think both Santa Fe and Albuquerque have feed stores that carry chicks in the spring. You can also order by mail from Privitt Hatchery out of Portales. There used to be a hatchery in Ocate called L'ocate, I am not sure they are still there and know nothing about them. I have always had great luck with Privitt, their Orps were always happy and healthy birds.

If you start with chicks in mid March, they will be ready to go outside by May 1st and by then spring is somewhere around the corner. :p

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! I'm not familiar with NM season changes, so best to talk to someone like @TwoCrows on that. But I think it's great that you want to get back into chickens! We need more chicken lovers around here!!! :ya
