(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am brand new to chickens
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 0 and am looking to have 4-6
(3) What breeds do you have?
I do not have any but am wanting to get Blue Laced Red Wyandotte or Rhode Island Red
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
..... probably the responsibility for my 5 children. I will most likely like getting to know their different personalities and of course having fresh eggs
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I play Soccer, Volleyball, watch my kids play sports, I play Chess, Dungeons and Dragons, I garden, I hike, camp, read, and the biggest of all would be spend time with Janelle.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We just bought our first house. I am married to Janelle (it will be 10 years this year!) and am 31 years old. We have 5 children (Ezra 8, Cade 7, Elora 6, Callie 3, and Juvia 1). We have a cat named Anubis and I want to have chickens and Bees very soon. (don't know exactly how to separate my garden, bees, and chickens yet on only .82 acres of lands and neighbors close by)
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
A friend told me about BYC and I did not know about it much. I just know that when I am more settled and my credit is better and I am making more money (right now I am a special education teacher and a soccer coach I might try and become a principal) I want to have a real farm with a few pigs, goats, bees, chickens, and maybe a cow with a very large garden. With that said it is good to find a community with so many different people and experiences that are willing to throw out some advice.

:welcome I hope you enjoy the site and the addition of chickens when you get them. I have had chickens for 5 years and in July will be 6 years. If you need any advice on breeds dont be afraid to ask as I have a mixed flock of standard and bantam chickens. Most of my bantams are mixed breeds and some home grown. and most of my standards are heritage breeds.

Welcome to BYC!
Chickens will be a great start to your farming aspirations...
And I can already see Chicken Math at work in your future...

:frowHi there neighbor. I’m down in Wilmington.
You’ve got a tsc in Jacksonville and in Rocky Point!
Lucky duck!

When you get ready to get set up for your chickens, don’t buy a prefab coop!

The manufacturers fib about sizes and how many birds will live in them harmoniously and they are NOT made of materials that withstand the kind of weather we get in SE NC.
We got 104.2 inches of rain for 2018. Twice the norm. But who knows, it might be the new norm!

You need something sturdy enough to not rot and mold and turn to mush in the rain, plenty of ventilation for the heat and humidity, and heavy enough to not blow away or get crushed by a fallen tree in a hurricane.

Other than that, have fun on your chicken journey!
We are always around to lend a helping hand.
