Hello! My husband made an account to cross-post a hen or roo question from reddit, but I spend a lot of time looking at this forum, so I figured we should introduce ourselves.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are first time chicken havers this year! We are based out of St. Louis, Missouri.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Five, though at least ONE has turned out to be a rooster, so he is on thin ice right now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Speckled Sussex (rooster), Buff Orpington (hen), then 3 yet-undetermind others, an Easter Egger, a Lavender Orpington, and a Splash Wyandotte.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far, I love the routine of getting up to let the girls out in the morning, and I think they're just silly. My spouse works from home, and he enjoys taking breaks from calls to sit out in the run
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We like nature, birdwatching, and because we are late-20somethings we also like playing pickleball. Plus video games, when we are feeling like indoor cats.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I work with birds in my career, though not poultry-- my full-time job is working with large raptors/birds of prey. That's how my partner and I met, as he also volunteers at my workplace! We have kind of a menagerie at home, with 2 cats, a pet rat, a crested gecko, a 20-year old snake, and now of course 5 chickens.
