new to chickens

i'm picking up 3 barred rock and three easter eggers and a rooster friday. they are all three weeks old. what items do i need to get them to the point of putting them into a run?

Hi and

We buy our chicks when they're a couple of weeks old and keep them under a heat lamp until they have more feathers (four to six weeks of age depending on how cold it is). I'd say you want to get a heat lamp (any old thing should do as long as it's not a fire hazard and the bulb produces heat. We used a table lamp suspended upside down until we got something more suitable )

Your chicks will also need food, water and somewhere to stay with suitable bedding before they go outside. Most people don't recommend newspaper because little chickens can slip on it, but for your older chickens it should be fine. Wood chips are common but I've never used them.

For food and water you can get something to put them in, but it doesn't have to be a fancy feeder/waterer. You can use a dish or box if you like, but be careful the chickens don't tip it over or your brooder will be a mess. One of ours managed to flip the water dish onto itself so we had to hold it for ages in a towel before it dried. Try putting something heavy in the water dish, like marbles.

Can't really think of anything else, we've never bought anything particularly sophisticated and have raised many chickens in cardboard boxes. You should be fine as long as your chicks have the basics - food, water and heat.

X3 As mentioned above basically you only need a brooder / place to keep the chicks, a heat source / heat lamp, and food/ water containers. check out the Brooder page for ideas, they can be as simple as a big cardboard box (you will need something over the top of whatever you use since some 3 week old chicks can fly pretty well) https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/homemade-chicken-brooder-designs-pictures
