NEW TO DUCKS

So I was out playing with the kids and noticed something. Some of the Mallards have the stripe on their heads that go all the way and touch the black on their neck and others don't. Is this an indication of male and female?

And I have no idea about the stripes in the eyes. I would suspect more possibility of one being a mix, and one being pure, but I’m not sure. Hopefully someone who knows more about the breeds would know.

So here is a question. Tina decided that we should get chickens now that we have the ducklings. She said they can grow up together. I have read several different things about keeping ducks and chickens together and not keeping them together.

We have a two car carport that has been framed up with chicken wire and hardcloth. This was on the property when we purchased it. What are your thoughts on keeping them together?

I keep them together without trouble. I just make sure not to keep water IN the coop, because that's asking for a mess with ducks. So the water stays in the run, and everyone does fine

Only trouble you could run into is if you end up with a drake that thinks he wants to mate with the hens - that would require immediate separation.

at present I only have one drake, a Pekin, that will be in there. As the youngins get older I plan to move all water and food into the run and not the coop as well.

Here is an update on the kids. Everyone is doing great. We got the shed finished and converted into a coop. Next will be to complete the entrance for them.
How old do they have to be before I can take the food and water out of the coop and put it into the run?
