We got 6 ducklings today. I have no clue how old they are, maybe a week or so. I can get a rough idea on chicks on their age but ducklings, no clue. They are either Rouen or Mallard and I have no clue how to tell the difference.
We have them in the brooder with the new peeps that we just hatched. I'm in the process of reading all the ducks stuff over again. I read it a couple years ago when I thought about getting ducks before. These came from someone at work.

Some of them have bolder stripes and there is a second stripe instead of a dash

Those are a few days old and appear to be mallards.
2 full stripes is a rouen. 1 stripe and a dash or dot or part of a stripe is a mallard.

Great, that means they are going to fly. I plan on free ranging with my chickens. I hope they don't get eaten.
My husband was asking if they fly, do they migrate? I said I didn't think so. They are domesticated mallards, we are their parents.

You can clip the wings and they will stay around. My family had two mallards when I was in high school and we kept them in a pen, let them out to free range occasionally and just kept the wings clipped.
