I located an animal rescue for feral cats on 7 acres in Southern Maryland, and bought a couple sheep, goats, peacocks, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl. I have approx. 24 hens, 4 roosters.

I do talk about the Farmette on our blog site: http://animalrescuefoundation.blog

I love my chickens. I bought books. They eat a holistic grain mixture, chick starter with vitamins and minerals, oats, cracked corn, millet, barley. I put out oyster shells. When it's cold, I may make them hamburger, rice pilaf or oatmeal. In summer, watermelon. I buy dried meal worms in bulk. They all free range. Love learning through this site.

Varieties? Uh...I have 3 black chickens, 5 maroons, lots of reddish ones, three Corn Flake roosters, one black and white rooster. The Amish gave me two roosters because they were sick or crippled. With antibiotics, aspirin, meal worms and oyster shells, both made it. One had a calcium deficiency and his legs were limp...he's running around now. They LOVE bread. I get 15 loaves of day old for $4.

Our cats have a Catio - a 12' x 16' x 8' high fenced, roofed outdoor enclosure with 30 shelves made of Trex so cats get lots of fowl walking by.
