New to Pigeons--need some help with questions!

online I saw a cage that went around the bob door and up over the roof in an 'L' but upside down. This allows the birds up on the roof where they can see even better to get to know their surroundings. (at least that's what they claim, I have no experience w/pigeons)

Thank you both for your helpful response!!

Very exciting about your new squeakers. At that age can you be certain of their gender?

I probably will have some more questions about building my loft, don't know if I should start a new thread or continue to highjack this one LOL.

I have heard several ways to sex (tell gender) pigeons, and I think most of them require maturity, but I'll let others chime in. Generally, the males are a bit bigger, with bigger heads. Males will put a show on and coo if you put them in front of a mirror. Both males and females sit on eggs, so that is not a way to sex them, FYI, I think some folks get confused there.

Feel free to hijack this thread regarding loft building, or you can send me a PM if you want tips on building the one I built using the Scott plans. One tip I forgot to mention is to be careful nailing or screwing 2x2 pieces of wood, as they can split very easily. What I did was use trim screws, which are skinnier than normal screws, and that worked great for fastening 2x2s.

Happy to serve as a resource for you if you choose the Scott plans, since I just finished building my loft using them.

I was thinking I am going to have to build my own cage type contraption for this, but this product you mention sounds easier. Where did you see this online? Thanks.

The one I saw was made by the fancier, but looked pretty easy to make. It was a little bent from use taking it on and off but still worked good Can you picture what I'm talking about? Its the box around the bob door extended upover the roof maybe 18" above and giving them a space up on the roof to look around. With a heavy mesh and cage clips and a little framing where it meets the side of the loft and the roof?? For ready made pigeon stuff there is Foys.com but I don't think the sell this...so sadly you would have to make your own.

For just the simple cage(not allowing roof access) I think I might re-purpose a rat cage I no longer need.

Will talk to you more about my loft plans later...Love the look of yours, so well built!

I've seen (in the many you-tube videos about pigeons!) them made with even chicken wire or hardware cloth or wire fencing, just cut the pieces, clip together with cage clips and maybe reinforce the edges a bit.

BTW there are some great you-tube videos on training!!! Just like @hokum Coco explained. You might find them interesting. Pretty sure that where i saw the L shaped cage.

this video shows the L shape concept. this other video show Dacian Busecan, I really like how he handles his birds.

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking I would end up having to build something like this. Good thing I have a bunch of that metal wiring left from building my loft!

This is the one I was really looking for...
show a much better built version of the L shaped "look-around" as I've heard it called as well as the regular square trap cage. Also this guy gives very detailed tips for training new and young birds!I

For some reason the link to that YouTube video does not work

If this doesn't work go to youtube and search: training birmingham rollers...(name of video) done by ppotty1 Your birds are coming soon now, no?

I think it will work now, tested it. ;D
