if you want pure bred RIR you need an RIR rooster. if you are fine crossbreeding any rooster will do. If you put some research into it i'm sure you could come up with a cool breed depending on the rooster you get. hope this helps.

I originally wanted a RIR rooster and thought that was what I was getting when I went to pick him up today. Now I'm not so sure... The rooster I got is beautiful, but his coloring is nothing like my hens. My hens are dark dark red, almost black and this rooster is orange with lots of white tufts throughout his feathering. He also has white tail feathers and bright yellow legs. I am new to chickens so I am still learning and have come to realize that there are so many different color schemes to a lot of the breeds. I am keeping this rooster, simply because he is gorgeous, but not sure he is a RIR. Any thoughts?

He won't improve your flock, sounds like a production red type bird.
