Hello from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, I've raised Buff Orpington's and Black Australorp's for a short time and if you want pet and eggs both breeds will be great options for you... They both are very docile breeds (my 5 year old would pick them up and sing to them and they seemed to enjoy it). Both are also champion layers of nice size brown eggs, although in my limited experience the BO's have a stronger broody streak so you might get less eggs if you get lucky or unlucky to get a good broody hen.
