Welcome to BYC!Hi,
New here! I am also new to chickens. I’ve been doing tons of research since we moved to the country in December. We’ve always wanted a laying flock and can finally accommodate. 3 weeks ago I built our brooder and 2 weeks ago started bringing chicks home. I am calling it our Rainbow flock. We have decided that for our first flock we will get an assortment of layers to determine which hens we like. We are trying to stick to the calm and docile breeds. We’re a family of 4, and we’ll be giving eggs to both my parents and my husband parents so we settled on 15 layers. I have a 7yr old and a 12 yr old and both are in 4H and want to do the poultry project, so well have a few ornamental chicks as well. So here’s the ladies! (we hope they’re all hens)
Barbra- Buff Orpington
Reba- Red Sussex
Francis- Cuckoo Maran
Nugget- Barred Rock
Daisy- Welsummer or Legbar? Was in the ornamental bin....
Robin- Ameraucana
Big Mama- Ameraucana
Blue- Ameraucana
Rose- Black Star
Dorothy- Cuckoo Maran
Sophia- Black Australorp
Lucy- White Cochin
Margret- Mystery Chick. Was in the Ameraucana bin.
?- Blue Laced Red Wyandotte
?- Blue Australorp/Rhode Island Red
Pip, Blanche, and Edith our our Fancy Feathers. The are Assorted Polish Chicks!
Let me know what you guys think and I’d love to post pics of Margret and get some help finding out what she might be! Also here’s the brooder I built! 5x3x2View attachment 2044808
I plan on doing weekly pics, but not sure how to go about posting them. Or where to post progression pics. Any tips?Welcome to Backyard Chickens. We love pictures, the more the merrier.
I was just talking to my husband about this. If we out grow too quickly our plan is to build a simple 4 wall pen in the garage. Something with higher walls and an open floor. Well set it straight on the concrete and cover the floor with shavings.Welcome to BYC!
Nice job on the brooder. It looks great. Not sure it will last very long for 15 chicks though. They'll likely outgrow it by 4 or 5 weeks. Hopefully the weather warns up enough to get them outside then. Otherwise, could you consider a second brooder or grow out pen? A dog pen with a tap on the ground covered in shavings would work great as a grow out after the first few weeks. Especially of you have a garage top stick it in. You would still need heat though.
You can post pictures, stories and other fun stuff on your flock here... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/pictures-stories-of-my-chickens.39/I plan on doing weekly pics, but not sure how to go about posting them. Or where to post progression pics. Any tips?
