New to the chicken world

Hello:frow
Welcome to BYC!!
So glad to have you here!!
Thanks for sharing your story!!
You have come to the right place.
There are many people on here that are ready to help in anyway they can!
The learning center also has alot of great information on it as well!
Enjoy!:wee

We love them. One of them seems to have a difficult time walking. Seems it has curled toes. Is the best solution to tape?

Yes, if you can straighten the toes with tape or even a cardboard cut out of the entire foot and tape the toes down, anything to straighten them. VITAMINS! This helps with crooked toes really well. Especially B Vitamins. E as well. Silkies can always be vitamin deficient for some reason. Keep the vitamins handy all their lives.

:welcome:celebrate

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, please get your chickens some Vaseline or bag balm to stave off frostbite before they get it! Baby, it's cold outside! :D

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has an active Silkie Thread, a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share more Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

What a great hatch rate for you. Silkies are awesome and one of the most popular breeds. However they (and Polish) are the most difficult breeds to sex early. Four to five months is about the earliest for silkies. Sometimes you can't tell till they crow or lay eggs.

You may enjoy following the "Silkie thread," on BYC for more information about them. So glad you joined the BYC flock.
