Hello all! I'm Jennifer from Roy, WA. We just started our flock yesterday! We are starting with one each Ameraucana, RIR, Bk sex link, gold sex link, Plymouth rock, and australorp. Unfortunately, we already experienced the cruelty of chicken ownership early this morning when our brand new black sex link chick passed away. :( The rest are doing great so far! I have already learned so much from this site and know it will be my go-to for a long while to come!

So sorry about your baby passing.

Not all babies make it to adulthood. If you babies are new hatchlings, make sure your brooder temp is about 95 degrees. Keep the heat off to one side and the food and water off to the other side so not only are there cool spots in the brooder, but the babies have to leave the heat to get to the goods. Toughens them up. Keep the thermometer on the floor directly beneath the heat source. Lay down paper towels and sprinkle food all around the floor by the feeder so they can find the food. And dip everybodies beak in the water so they know where it is stored as well. You can remove the paper towels in a few days once they know where to find food. Do not cover the lid of the brooder with anything but a screen or wire for good heat and oxygen exchange. Lower your temp 5 degrees each week for 6 weeks.

Good luck with your new babies and welcome to BYC!

Thanks so much for the info! They all seemed to easily find the food and water. The little one that passed never even walked around or stood up. I knew from the moment she went in the brooder something wasn't right. I contacted the seller and they are replacing her, but that was a long, sad night. I guess it's just part of life, right? We so enjoy watching the little ones hop around and play with each other. :)

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Good luck and have fun with the new chicks! Sorry about the little one you lost, some chicks just have something wrong with them when they hatch and can't make it.
