Hello Everyone,

We are just starting out our flock for eggs for both personal use and sell, eventually hatching eggs to sell chicks as well... We have a flock of 18 chicks. Three of the chicks are 3 weeks old when would be a good time to get them off of the heat lamp? Also we have an issue with one of our chicks pecking the others. We have tried isolating her but that really hasn't helped much due to the fact that the others have picked up her bad traits. We have also tried electrolytes to see if maybe they were stressed. They still peck but the one hen is the main culprit... Any ideas on how to stop it??? We love the site and have learned lots of valuable info so far. We hope to continue to learn more and have a successful business in the future. Any ideas or help we can gain from the site and it's users would be awesome!

Sincerely,
D&T

Thanks!
That's a lot lol. We have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rocks, 2 White Leghorns, 2 White Rocks, 2 Ameracaunas, 2 Golden Comets, 2 Black Australorp, 1 Black Australorp Rooster, 2 Blue Cochins, and 1 Black Star. We're hoping to expand it later on down the road but right now we're seeing how this flock works out

Hi, I'm new too. If it helps my chicks are 5 weeks, and they still have their heat lamp It's just moved back some, and the temp is about 80, They seem comfortable. I actually worry more about them going outside in 2 weeks, its hot in Alabama. I don't know about pecking problems, sorry. Good luck with your chicks! It's nice to meet you!

Welcome to both of you from Wisconsin. Try a bird mirror. You can get it at a pet store. I gives the birds something to peck at because they think they see another chick. I keeps them busy. You may want to also get a CHICK STICK. It is a stick of seed and fat that you hang. The chicks love it and it keeps them busy pecking at something else other than each other.

You could try switching to a red bulb for your heat lamp rather than a white one. The white light sometimes makes them a bit too excited.
Welcome to BYC!
